Do you want to become more involved with OHDSI’s global collaboration? OHDSI faculty members have developed five new tutorials to help you Join The Journey! Each of the tutorials will be offered virtually on Sunday, Oct.18, 2020, one day before our global symposium, and several will be offered in multiple languages.
2020 Tutorials (full descriptions are available below):
- OMOP CDM & Standardized Vocabularies
- Data Quality
- Cohorts & Phenotyping
- Oncology Module
- Technology Ecosystem
These FREE tutorials have been carefully developed by the OHDSI faculty to provide the best education in a virtual setting. They will include many of the advances made by our global network over the last year and will help provide you the foundation for your own work within our community.
As most tutorials are full-day sessions, you may only sign up for ONE tutorial. Please note that we are monitoring registration daily and we will cancel duplicate registrations. We appreciate your cooperation and support. The deadline to cancel or switch into a different tutorial is October 2 (changes are based on course availability). Please note that all tutorial times and structure are subject to change and you should always visit this website and all OHDSI social platforms for updates as we get closer to the event.
Class-size restrictions: Most tutorials are first-come, first-served. After the tutorials are full, you may sign up on a wait list. The Data Quality tutorials have no class-size restrictions.
Time Zones: The Data Quality, OMOP CDM & Standardized Vocabularies, Technology Ecosystem, and Oncology Module tutorials are offered in both U.S. and Asian Times Zones. In addition, some tutorials will be offered in different languages; therefore, please choose your tutorial ticket carefully.
Our European colleagues will have the opportunity to choose between tutorials in either the Asian or U.S. time zones (are you a morning person or a night owl?).
Waiting Lists: When tutorials are full, you may join a waiting list. Should you be accepted into the course, we will contact you via email. Please note that you need a google account in order to use the waiting list google forms. The forms will appear below next to the full courses.
PLEASE NOTE ALL TUTORIALS ARE FULL

TUTORIAL WORKSHOPS OFFERED ON SUNDAY, OCT. 18 ARE LISTED BELOW:
1) OMOP CDM & STANDARDIZED VOCABULARIES: The OMOP Common Data Model is the foundation of large-scale observational research in the OHDSI community. It harmonizes both the structure (the data model) and the content (the Standardized Vocabularies) of data. Data in the OMOP CDM enable the systematic application of research methods in a federated application. In this Tutorial, you will learn the principles of the model and vocabularies, and how data is mapped into both.
The tutorial is structured into three blocks, lasting 7.5 hours total:
• Understanding vocabulary concepts and mapping
• Using the hierarchy and relationships
• Creating a CDM instance
Each block contains an introduction, group exercises and subsequent reviews. You will get access to an OHDSI-in-a-box containing a database with synthetic data, ATLAS and a SQL client.
There will be five sessions offered for this tutorial as listed below. When capacities are full, we will create a wait list in case there are any late cancellations.

European collaborators have the option to choose any tutorial.
Tutorial prerequisites: Please watch last year’s OMOP CDM/Vocabulary tutorial video and read the CDM/vocabulary chapters in the Book of OHDSI prior to this tutorial, as our focus will be more on exercises and less on lectures. The only technical prerequisite is a computer with internet access. To aid collaboration throughout the tutorial, the faculty requests that all registrants have their video on during the session.
Tutorial Faculty: Mui Van Zandt, Christian Reich, Don Torok, Meghan Pettine, Frank DiMartini, Clair Blacketer, Melanie Philofsky, Anna Ostropolets, Yunpeng Li, Ying Zhang, Changran Wang, Xiaojun Ma, Jimyung Park, Suho Jin, Chul Hyoung Park, Youjin Park, Lingyi Tang, Masafumi Okada, Selva Muthu Kumaran Sathappan.
2) DATA QUALITY: The quality of the healthcare data used in research has an important impact on the value of the results. The OHDSI community has developed several tools to assess the quality of research data in an OMOP CDM repository. All have been used in federated networks for routine quality assurance and in advance of multi-site studies published in high-impact journals. This tutorial will demonstrate how these tools help meet the many challenges involved in ensuring that data’s quality is understood and can support valid multi-site studies. The Data Quality Tutorial is currently scheduled to be held in two (2) sessions, lasting four (4) hours apiece.
This is a list of topics that will be covered in each of the 4-hour sessions.:
Part 1: Data quality’s impact on research quality
Part 2: DQ tools for OMOP
Part 3: Using DQ tools in multi-site studies and networks
Part 4: Future directions in DQ assessment and assurance
Currently, projected start times are:
Session 1: 9 am start time in Korea/Japan; 8 am in China (English and Korean)
Session 2: 9 am start time in U.S. Eastern time zone (English)
European collaborators have the option to choose either tutorial.
Faculty are comprised of data quality tool developers and data quality experts. There is no limit on the number of participants, nor will there be technical prerequisites.
Tutorial prerequisites: All participants will be expected to watch videos on each data quality tool, which will be prepared in advance by the tutorial faculty.
Tutorial Faculty: Andrew Williams, Clair Blacketer, Ajit Londhe, Hanieh Razzaghi, Connor Callahan, Karthik Natarajan, Vojtech Huser, Mui Van Zandt, Meghan Pettine, Enzo Byun, Songheui Oh.
3) COHORT & PHENOTYPING: The phenotyping tutorial will discuss scientific best practices for phenotype development and evaluation, and to explore the use of OHDSI tools to facilitate those best practices. The learning objectives and technical competencies are:
• Learn principles for cohort definition
• Understand strategies for cohort diagnostics and evaluation
• Develop rule-based heuristics in ATLAS
• Learn when and how to apply CohortDiagnostics and PheValuator
This tutorial is currently scheduled to begin at 10 am Eastern Standard Time, US, and should last around six hours (time is subject to change). This course will be given in English.
Tutorial prerequisites: knowledge of OMOP CDM & Standardized Vocabularies
Tutorial Faculty: Patrick Ryan; additional faculty announced shortly.

4) ONCOLOGY MODULE: Research into oncology requires more details in addition to an abstraction layer for both the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. To represent cancer data ready for analytics, a new OHDSI Oncology Module was recently released. This model utilizes everything that is currently part of the OMOP CDM but embeds the cancer extensions into it. If you have cancer data you want to analyze, you are you engaged in cancer research, and you have experience with research in the OMOP CDM, you are the type of attendee we would love to see in this tutorial.
In this tutorial, you will be introduced into building and using data in this model. You will learn:
• How to create a proper oncology database instance in the OMOP CDM from your cancer EHR or registry data
• How to map your cancer data to the Standardized Vocabularies for cancer, including staging, grading, extension and invasion of the disease, as well as genomic biomarkers
• How to detect chemotherapy regimens
• How to define patient populations in SQL and in ATLAS
• How to utilize Disease Episodes for understanding disease progression, timing and outcomes (survival).
The tutorial is structured into three blocks, lasting 7.5 hours total. Each block contains an introduction, group exercises and subsequent reviews. You will get access to an OHDSI-in-a-box containing a database with synthetic cancer data, ATLAS and a SQL client.
There will be four sessions for this tutorial listed below. Please note that signing up for Oncology does not mean acceptance into the course; there is a vetting process to ensure that all attendees have the proper background to succeed in this tutorial (the questions are on the ticket’s order form). We will contact you to confirm acceptance at a later date. After the tutorials are full we will create a wait list in case there are any late cancellations.
